Benedikt Höwedes, who enjoyed ten seasons with Bundesliga elites FC Schalke 04, moved to Russian Premier League club FC Lokomotiv Moscow in 2018. Last month, he decided to terminate his 4-year contract with the Russian by side mutual consent, on the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Football suddenly became so unimportant: Benedikt Höwedes reveals reason behind his retirement

Following the suspension of the Russian league, Benedikt Höwedes decided to end his contract to return to his family in Germany. Speaking to German weekly magazine Der Spiegel, the 32 year old defender revealed that while his age was a factor, family duties deemed the sport irrelevant to him.

“I’ve made 50 games for Lokomotiv Moscow in the past two years, including in the Champions League, we’ve won cups and Supercups. Of course, I notice that it takes me longer to regenerate. I could make up for that for a while with my experience,” Höwedes said in the interview.

However, returning to his family after terminating the contract with Lokomotiv in June, changed his mind.

The German continued, “But recently I was travelling with my wife and child on a camper in the south of France. Then I noticed how blatant it was for me to experience my son up close.”

“Football suddenly became so unimportant to me,” Benni went on, “Our son is now 21 months old and unfortunately I didn’t get much from him during my time in Moscow. I suffered a lot as a family man.”

Höwedes married his long time girlfriend Lisa Wesseler in 2015. Their son, Bas Antonius, was born in 2018.

A youth product of Schalke, Höwedes joined the senior team in 2007. He made 240 appearances for The Royal Blues, scoring 12 times. In 2018, he also went on a loan spell with Serie A heavyweights Juventus, but due to injuries only made three appearances for the Italian club.

A versatile defender, Höwedes was chosen as a left back to represent Germany in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He was also one of the three German players who played for every minute of the tournament, alongside goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and captain Phillip Lahm. He has made 44 international appearances.

After Zaha’s tweet was aired, West Midlands Police found in their investigation that the messages were sent by a 12 year old, and he was taken into custody. Villa also imposed a lifetime ban on the perpetrator.

However, the striker claims that both the social media platforms have done nothing substantial to counter such activities online.

Wilfred Zaha accuses Twitter, Instagram for failing to counter racism

In a recent interview with CNN Sport, Wilfred Zaha revealed that the underage Villa fan was just one of many people that he had received racial abuses during that week.

“Even after the 12-year-old, I reported 50 accounts that I was racially abused from that week,” Zaha said in the interview.

The Ivory Coast international further stated that the reported accounts return with new ones, lamenting that the platforms require no ID proofs to make new accounts.

“What happens? Those accounts get blocked then they just make a new one straight afterwards?” the 27 year old continued, “With everything that we register for these days, we have to give some sort of I.D. Why is it not the same for Instagram, or Twitter?”

“Because that’s where people tend to say what they really feel about people, no matter how hurtful or racist it is,” he added.

Zaha further said that he had to censor the xenophobic slurs himself, and called out the social media firms for being inadequate in taking steps against it.

“I’ve gone through my Instagram account and there’s a section where you can block certain words,” Zaha went on, “I’ve tried myself because the social media platforms are obviously not doing enough.”

“You can register as a nine-year-old on Instagram and they wouldn’t know. What age is it to register? Thirteen. The boy who abused me is twelve. How does he even get on there? What checks are they making?” he concluded.

The supporters, already happy with Ziyech’s arrival in Stamford Bridge, were overwhelmed by the former Amsterdam icon’s performance, as they lauded the player in the comments.

Not just the fans, Chelsea boss Lampard himself has hailed Ziyech for his engrossing display of skills in drills.

“He’s (Hakim Ziyech) settled in, chatting and forming those new relationships in the early stages, and more importantly for him, he’s getting himself fit,” said the gaffer recently.

“Nice to take a bit part in training and then also get some physical work because he hasn’t trained or played for quite a while,” the 42 year old added.

Hakim Ziyech moved to Stamford Bridge on a five year deal after Chelsea and Ajax agreed on a deal of approximately €44 million on 14th February. He has played in four Eredivisie seasons with the Dutch giants, and has scored 38 goals in 112 appearances.

The player, a youth product of Dutch club SC Heerenveen, said recently that playing for Chelsea was a dream come true for him.

“When I was young, the players that played here, it was always a big club so I am very happy and it means a lot,” Ziyech said in an interview last week, “I was playing in the youth in Heerenveen and here was playing Drogba, Lampard, Terry, all those big names.”

“We were always for Chelsea, and if you look at now, if you can play here it means a lot to me,” he added.

Sweet turned sour: Fabinho suffers home robbery during Liverpool’s title celebration

As the Brazilian international was carousing with his teammates, news broke out about a robbery at his residence in the town of Formby in Merseyside. According to reports, the incident had taken place somewhere between Wednesday afternoon and early hours of Thursday, when the house was completely empty.

Thieves broke in and stole a number of valuable jewellery items and Fabinho’s Audi RS6, which was later recovered in Wigan. The police were called to the spot after Fabinho and his wife Rebeca Tavares found out about the burglary upon returning home.

“Detectives in Sefton are appealing for information following a burglary in Formby,” an spokesperson for Merseyside Police told Daily Mail, “No-one was in the property at the time of the incident but it was thought the burglary happened sometime between 3pm on Wednesday, 22 July and 4am on Thursday, 23 July.”

“The house and car have been forensically examined by Crime Scene Investigators and CCTV enquiries in the area are on-going,” the spokesperson further added.

The police also asked anyone in the area who had seen a grey Audi RS6 during the time of burglary to get in contact with the detectives.

While Fabinho himself has not said anything yet, Rebeca tweeted earlier today that they were safe.

With the superb victory over Chelsea, Liverpool finished their 2019-20 season with 96 points. Naby Keïta opened up the scoreline in the 23rd minute, followed by two back to back strikes from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Georginio Wijnaldum. Olivier Giroud scored the first goal for the visitors in the stoppage time.

The 33 year old has claimed the Trofeo Pichichi for the seventh time, a record he previously had held jointly wih six time winner Athletic Bilbao legend Telmo Zarra. The Pichichi trophy, honoured to legendary Bilbao forward Rafael “Pichichi” Moren, is awarded by the Spanish sports outlet Marca to the top goalscorer of each La Liga season.

However, the veteran goal machine’s reaction to the double record break is as humble as it gets.

“Individual achievements are always secondary,” Messi said in an interview on Sunday, “I wished it could have come along with the league title.”

In additon to Leo’s brace and Fati’s single strike, Barcelona’s two additional goals against Alavés came from Luis Suárez and Nélson Semedo, as they finished the season second in the league table, five points being the champions Real Madrid.

The entry of WWE superstars into the arenas have always been dramatic, with their own and unique entrance musics playing in the background as they walk towards the ring. From hyping up the audience to sending a message to the opponent, the theme song of the wrestlers, from past to present are a treat for the WWE fans all over the world.

Having a tough time down in the second half of the table, Arsenal weren’t expecting a walk in the park against Klopp’s star studded squad, as the match started with the visitors taking the lead as the spectacular Sadio Mané netted the opener in the 20th minute.

However, the match took a u-turn in the rest of the first half. Alexandre Lacazette scored the equaliser in the 32nd minute, followed by Reiss Nelson’s score just a minute before half time.

Time to play the Game: Arsenal start the second half with Triple H’s theme song

If this wasn’t enough of an excitement for the home supporters glued to their screens, the amusement was only starting. As the Arsenal team walked down the pitch before the second half, with Triple H aka ‘The Game’s entrance music playing in the background.

While the stands were empty due to the COVID-19 restrictions, ‘Time to Play the Game’ was quite an intimidation for the Reds, who failed to turn the scoreline around in the next 45 minutes, and Arsenal swiped off a clean three points out of the game.

Ronaldo, who came third in the 2019 awards, is 5/1 down in fourth, behind Manchester City talisman Kevin de Bruyne in third, the first Premier League player to be featured in the odds list.

The Polish hit man has been an absolute sensation in the current season, and has scored a whopping 34 goals in 31 appearances for the Bavarian giants. The 31 year old is also the leading goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League with 11 goals, miles ahead of both Messi and Ronaldo, the usual top scorer of the tournament in the past.

Former Manchester United forward Robin van Persie has also hailed Lewandowski as the probable winner of the 2020 Ballon d’Or via a post on Twitter. Surprisingly, neither Messi nor Ronaldo is in his top three, as he ranks de Bruyne and Liverpool icon Sadio Mané as his second and third choices.

On the other hand, Real Madrid gaffer Zinedine Zidane has stated that Karim Benzema and the rest of the Galacticos squad are all deserving to be the winner of the award.

“In football, everyone can have a say. For me, my players are the best,” the former French international said in a press conference.

“Karim is not only this year, he has done very well for many years. The Ballon d’Or is won by only one, and everyone can comment, but for me all my players deserve it,” the 48 year old added.

Peltz hails from Westchester County, New York. She made her breakthrough to the big screen with the role of Katara in The Last Airbender, followed by another big role in Transformers: Age of Extinction, where she was cast as Tessa Yeager.

Daughter of billionaire businessman Nelson Peltz and model Claudia Heffner, Nicola has also starred in A&E drama series Bates Motel. Her brother Brad Peltz is an ice hockey player who plays for Ottawa Senators in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Following his father’s footsteps, Brooklyn started his youth career at the Arsenal Football Club Academy, but failed to receive a scholarship. In 2014, he started modelling, and has made appearances for The New York Times, Vogue and more.

He has also studied photography at the Parsons School of Design in New York, and has worked with Burberry BRIT for a photography campaign.
