Bruno Fernandes’s hilarious dive against Chelsea has put a serious dent on Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s backing of his players and the claim that they are not divers.

Bruno was the only Red Devil scoring as Manchester United went on to lose to Chelsea 1-3. Giroud, Mount and Maguire were the scorers for the blues. Before the goals were scored, however, Bruno Fernandes attracted attention with a clear dive.

Ahead of the match, Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had said of Bruno: “Fernandes is very clever in his movement. We saw that at Aston Villa to make something feel like a penalty where maybe it even isn’t. As a player we can talk about VAR decisions and whether they’re right or wrong. But if a player is going to dangle a leg and not move their feet then you obviously do leave yourself open to penalties, VAR or no VAR.”

Solksjaer defended his player: “If you’ve got quick feet like Dan James, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood you’ll get tackled outside and inside the box. We’ve earned our right to any decision this season. We’ve had decisions overturned from being against us to being for us which means the initial decision was against us. It’s up to the referee but there’s too many people talking and trying to influence people, I don’t want to. VAR is there to help get more correct decisions.”

“I’ve always said a factual decision is a fact so 1cm or 1m offside you’re offside that’s just how it is in football now,” the Manchester United legend added.

With this loss against Chelsea, Manchester United were knocked out of the FA Cup, damaging Solksjaer’s hopes of winning a trophy in this season.

The 25 year old Bruno Fernandes joined the Red Devils in 2020, after plying his trade in the Serie A for Udinese and Sampdoria, and in his native Portugal for Sporting CP, where despite his age he was named club captain. After joining Manchester United, Bruno has scored 7 goals in 12 matches. He has also become a regular member of the Portugese National Football Team, scoring 2 times in 19 matches and winning the UEFA Nations Cup in the process.
