Welcome back: Horror tackle on Mbappe sparks 22-man tussle in Coupe de France final

In their first competitive game since the restart, Paris Saint-Germain secured the Coupe de France trophy after a 1-0 victory against Saint-Etienne. The return of French football saw a brutal challenge on Kylian Mbappe which forced him off the field.

Neymar scored the lone goal of the contest in the 14th minute while the moment which sparked the controversy arrived half-way through the first half.

As Mbappe raced through the field after receiving a through ball, Saint-Etienne skipper Loic Perrin lunged in for a brute tackle which caught the player The young Frenchman rolled around in agony as players kicked off a squabble around him.

Goalkeeper of Sanit-Etienne Jessy Moulin sprinted off his line to confront the referee and the PSG players and proceeded to shove Marquinhos. The referee was unable to diffuse the situation as the tussle escalated with social distancing off the table.

The referee dished out the cards after the situation was under control. Jessy Moulin and Romain Hamouma, Mitchell Baker, and Leandro Paredes all received yellow cards for their actions. The culprit, Loic Perrin was awarded a red card after consultation from VAR with the referee having only awarded a yellow card for the player.

The violent half of football saw a total of 9 yellow cards and 1 red card being handed out by the referee. A total of seven additional minutes were set in place as the stoppage time for the first half to make up for the lost time due to the scruffle. Mbappe played a substantial role in PSG’s goal and was looking bright until disaster struck.

Mbappe left in tears

The PSG team attended to Kylian Mbappe on the pitch and had to leave the pitch. The youngster left the field in tears as Pablo Sarabia came to replace him for the rest of the match.

While the severity of the injury is yet to be known, the signs do not look good for the Ligue 1 champions as the forward was found to leave the ground in crutches. This injury comes as a huge blow for the club who look to advance in the Champions League having drawn in-form Atalanta in the quarter-finals.

PSG have yet another final in sight as they prepare to face Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue final next week before gearing up for the Champions League.
