The race for promotion to the Premier League is heating up in the Championship standings, but an equally ferocious battle is taking place at the opposite end of the table. Hull City’s survival hopes received a monumental dent after a thrashing at the hands of Wigan Athletic with two more games left to play.
Wigan Athletic opened the scoring in the first minute itself to unsettle the Tigers. A quiet spell endured for the next 25 minutes after which a scoring spree threw the visitors off their track and out of the fixture as well.
Kal Naismith, Jamal Lowe, and Joe Williams managed to score a goal while Kieffer Moore and Kieran Dowell scored two goals apiece. The side managed to net six goals in only a matter of 18 minutes.
The humiliating defeat at the DW Stadium against the Latics has earned the wrath of the supporters who desire to see the reign of manager Grant McCann at the club. Hull City faced their fourth consecutive defeat and have had a terrible run of form in 2020.
Hull City boss issues apology
The 40-year-old manager apologized to the Hull City fans following the embarrassing performance and asserted that it is unacceptable. He said:
“It has hurt us, and all I can do is apologize to the fans on behalf of everyone in that dressing room because it’s nowhere good enough, and I’m so, so sorry for that,”
“We just didn’t get to grips with it at all. We just didn’t turn up. We all felt embarrassed. We’re all hurting. We have worked so hard this season, and to get done like we did today is unacceptable, from everyone.”
Despite having 57 points and sitting pretty at the 12th spot in the Championship table, Wigan too faces the threat of relegation as they face a 12-point deduction for moving into administration.
