Lionel Messi signed a contract in 2017 which stated that he would have the opportunity to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of each season.

The club claims that the clause which would allowed him to leave on a free transfer has expired. But, the six time Ballon d’Or winner is adamant on departing from Camp Nou.

Lionel Messi has €700 million release clause in his contract. He wants to terminate his contract and part his way with the Catalan giants.

However, FC Barcelona could let the 33-year-old leave on a free transfer if certain conditions are fulfilled by the player.

 

The club wants the player not to participate in the 2020/21 season. Moreover, Lionel Messi would have to surrender the salary he was to he paid and he would be prohibited him from signing for a new club.

La Liga released an official statement on Sunday regarding this matter.

The statement read, “In relation to the different interpretations (some of them contradictory to each other) published in recent days in different media, related to the contractual situation of the player Lionel Andrés Messi with FC Barcelona, La Liga wishes to clarify that with regards to the player’s contract with his club.”

It continued, “The contract is currently in force and has a ‘termination clause’ applicable to the event that Lionel Andrés Messi decides to activate the early unilateral termination of the contract, carried out in accordance with article 16 of Royal Decree 1006/1985, of June 26, which regulates the special employment relationship of professional athletes.”

“In compliance with the applicable regulations, and following the corresponding procedure in these cases, LaLiga will not carry out the prior visa process for the player to be removed from the federation if they have not previously paid the amount of said clause.”

The Premier League side, Manchester City have their eyes set on the Argentine should he leave FC Barcelona. Boss, Pep Guardiola and Lionel could reunite once more and can do wonders together.
