Greg Stucker, Goodyear Racing Insider, provided insight into this decision during an interview on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. He explained, “Part of what we evaluated was the wet weather tread compound on a dry tire.” Stucker mentioned that they had previously used these tires and achieved positive results. He also discussed the performance and speed of the tires but highlighted the associated risks.
In concluding the conversation, Stucker remarked, “I think the All-Star race is the perfect place for that,” indicating that the All-Star race provides an ideal platform to experiment with such innovative tire strategies.
NASCAR All-Star Race 2024: Dual Tire Strategy Adds Excitement
The All-Star Race is an annual exhibition event that brings together the best drivers from the Cup Series for a high-stakes showdown. In 2024, the race promises even more excitement with a new twist: dual tire strategy.
- Prime Tire: Developed through Goodyear testing at the repaved track, the prime tire features conventional yellow sidewall lettering. It provides a balance of grip and durability.
- Option Tire: This tire has distinctive red sidewall lettering and uses the same rubber compound as wet-weather tires. It offers improved short-term grip but wears out more rapidly.
- Wet-Weather Tires: Teams will also have wet-weather tires on hand in case conditions warrant.
