Currently, world number eight Dominic Thiem made a statement about Emma Raducanu’s win at the US Open. He considers her victory to be a huge milestone in women’s sports and not just in her career.
“For me it’s one of the greatest achievements ever in women’s sports.”
The Briton had displayed a phenomenal performance at the US Open which led her to grab the Grand Slam title. She beat Leylah Fernandez, another strong contender, to clinch the title.
Britain has been in a Grand Slam title drought in the women’s category for 44 years which ended with Raducanu’s efforts at the US Open.
Her technique and her hard work were appreciated by tennis ace Dominic.
“The way she plays, her technique, the way she moves, somehow she brought it up to a new level for the whole game … it was great to see.”
The teenage ace did not lose a single set in the entire tournament. She qualified for the Major and never lost a single match up until she claimed the crown.
“It’s an incredible journey if you look at the stats. She didn’t lose one set the whole tournament. She came from qualifying and she didn’t even play one tiebreak. That’s simply amazing and something that probably was never witnessed before.”
Raducanu is someone to look out for in the tennis circuit. She jumped to the 23rd spot from her previously held 127th rank.
Fellow British tennis legend and former world number 1 Andy Murray, is delighted about her win. He believes that this will give a nice push to the authorities back home to fund more tennis events and bring in more kids that are interested in the sport.
Murray gushed about how good she was when both of them took part in the Wimbledon tournament.
“I’ve spent a little time around her on the practice court, but more so in the same building, training close to each other, and watching what she’s doing, and she’s obviously really, really good.”
Raducanu had reached the fourth round in the event.
