Andy Murray, the British tennis legend, defeats the German Yannick Maden at the Rennes 6-3, 6-1. He is to continue his campaign at the challenger event.

Fans expect this event to be the Scot’s comeback show after he bowed out of the US Open in the first round.

After his win at the event, Murray mentioned that he wanted to continue playing and get his body accustomed to it. Before his injury, Murray was used to playing three four matches in a week. Now he plans to get back to that rhythm.

“Obviously I would like to try and win the event. Most importantly, for me, is to get matches. I want to keep playing, competing and get my body used to playing two, three, four matches in a week again.”

The 34 year-old currently holds the 116 rank. Murray has only one goal now – improve his ranking.

“One of the goals between now and the end of the year is to try and make a big improvement with my ranking, and to do that, I need to be competing enough.”

The former world number one lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round at the New York tournament. He took a big blow at the event where he had emerged triumphant thrice. The last time he won the New York major title was 2012 after which he has not been able to make any major progress in his career before he dropped down the world rankings.

Murray’s injury was so serious that he had to undergo surgery twice – once in 2017 and again in 2019.

Murray is pretty confident that he can still play at the top level but he needs time to adjust his body and loosen his muscles. One of the challenges that Murray is facing at the moment is that he has to play top players at the very beginning of the game.

“I still feel like I can play a very high level but if all of the time when I go to the big tournaments I play top players right at the beginning of the event, it’s not easy.”
