Alana McLaughin has just created history for being the second ever transgender mixed martial arts fighter, but that feat has also landed her at the focal point of much criticism, and the latest comes straight from UFC middleweight Sean Strickland.

On 10th September, McLaughin became the first openly transgender MMA fighter in the last seven years to compete professionally and was supported by Fallon Fox at the cageside, who is the first ever trans MMA fighter and last competed in 2014.

A former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier who served for six years, McLaughlin left the military in 2010 and started her transition.

McLaughlin squared off against Celine Provost in a featherweight bout at the Combate Global event which was hosted at the Univision Studios in Miami, Florida. She won the fight in the second round via rear naked choke.

While the 38-year-old has been applauded by many, McLaughlin has also been at the receiving end of criticism, as a number of combat sports fraternity has seen this as detrimental towards women MMA fighters.

Many have addressed McLaughlin as a ‘cheater’ for having unfair advantage over her opponent Provost, who is a cisgender woman, even though she passed the medical tests conducted by Florida State Boxing Commission.

Strickland wants McLaughlin to “get out of women’s MMA”

Among those who have had their nerves struck by McLaughlin competing in MMA as a transgender woman, Sean Strickland took to his Instagram to fire some shots at ‘Lady Feral’ following her win.

Strickland made it clear that he still sees McLaughlin as a man, and called her to quit women’s MMA.

“Change your name, call yourself a woman… but you’re still a fu****g man, get out of women’s MMA, coward. This is why the athletic commission is useless,” Strickland posted on his Instagram story.

“I consider myself a classical feminist. If your religion or government has an unequal standard for women then I’m not with it. Testicles at birth == man. Ovaries at birth ==== woman,” he added.

Do you agree with Sean Strickland’s views on Alan McLaughlin competing as a transgender fighter in women’s MMA? Let us know in the comments.
