Darkness descended over Barcelona while the sun never glimmered brighter in Munich as a historic European night unfurled itself in Lisbon. Bayern Munich thrashed FC Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-final to keep their hopes of a treble very much alive.

Bayern Munich named the same line-up which eased past Chelsea in the second-leg while Barcelona opted for a relatively defensive line-up. Antoine Griezmann was benched as Setien opted for a 4-4-2 shape against the Bavarian giants.

The action kicked-off right from the word go as the Bundesliga champions took the lead four minutes in through in-form Thomas Muller. Although, minutes later, Lionel Messi was able to take advantage of Bayern Munich’s high defensive line. The move resulted in an embarrassing own goal for David Alaba with Manuel Neuer unable to keep the effort of his own defender off the net.

While the encounter remained balanced as both teams eyed the lead, it was the German outfit that broke through first. Barcelona’s ploy to play out from the back was a recipe for disaster considering Bayern Munich’s impeccable pressing. The relentless pressing caused Sergi Roberto to lose the ball to Serge Gnabry who placed it for Ivan Perisic to blast his left foot through it.

The tournament favourites took the contest from there and were 4-1 up by half-time thanks to goals from Serge Gnabry and Thomas Muller. Barcelona appeared to claw back into the contest after a composed finish from Luis Suarez, but things unfortunately only went south for the Catalan giants.

Barcelona’s misery continued in the second half as well

Alphonso Davies’ moment on magic down the left flank set the team’s fifth goal up for Joshua Kimmich. With the contest heading to a finish, Hansi Flick’s substitutions did the trick as well. Playing against his parent club, Phillipe Coutinho took advantage of the hapless defence. The Brazilian recorded two goals and an assist in just 10 minutes.

The top scorer of this year’s edition Robert Lewandowski, who endured a rough time also made it to the scoresheet to add on to Ter Stegen and Barcelona’s plight. This marked Barcelona’s heaviest defeat in Europe and extended the team’s knockout predicament to another level.

Bayern Munich became the first-ever team to score 8 goals in a Champions League knockout fixture. As a result, Barcelona have entered the history books for all the wrong reasons by being the solitary club to concede eight goals in a knockout match.

Speaking after the match Pique claimed that this defeat is a sign for the club to reflect upon and make some major changes. He said:

“Horrible game, awful feelings, total embarrassment. It is very hard, but hopefully serves for something. We al need to reflect. The club needs changes, not talking about coach or players, the club needs changes of all type.¨

Bayern Munich, who have been flawless in the competition so far, will now face the winner of tomorrow’s quarter-final between Manchester City and Lyon.
