WBC lightweight champion of the world Devin Haney has traded some shots yesterday, but outside the squared circle, and at the other end of the shots was Luke Campbell.
On 29th May, Devin Haney marked his third straight title defense against a weathered Jorge Linares via a 12-round unanimous decision victory at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada, while also retaining his undefeated record.
The 22-year-old has been gaining appreciation from the boxing fraternity as well the fandom, but some of those praises come with a low jab, and the likewise was seen from Luke Campbell on his tweet congratulating Haney on his win.
The shot I dropped Ryan Garcia with would have slept you: Luke Campbell tells Devin Haney
It all started when Devin Haney called out WBC interim champion Ryan Garcia regarding his Instagram story, calling him a “coward”. Recalling Garcia’s January fight against Campbell, Haney pointed out how “KingRy” was dropped by the Brit in the 2nd round of the fight, although Garcia was quick to recover.
Accusing Garcia of ducking both Linares and himself, Haney tweeted, “if Luke Campbell dropped you what would have Linares have done to you?”
This seemingly hit a nerve in Campbell, who hit Haney back with, “Congrats on your win lad but FYI the shot I dropped Ryan with would have slept you and Linares is now 3 years past his best”.
Haney was ready with his verbal hook, as he called out “Cool Hand” for not beating anyone significant in his career, as well as tagged him a “fluke”.
“Calm down Luke the fluke you’ve never won a big fight in your life… tell me one person that you beat??” Haney wrote.
Although Campbell is on a two fight losing streak, having lost to Vasyl Lomachenko back on 31st August 2019 via unanimous decision, followed by his 7th round TKO defeat at the hands of Garcia this January, he is a 2012 London Olympic Games gold medallist, an achievement he brought forward.
“Have had some big fights and winning the Olympics was a decent buzz, nothing like that feeling when a new email hits the inbox, though, eh? Enjoy the victory champ,” Campbell tweeted, to which Haney replied, “God bless”.
