Terence Crawford says he’s “done” trying to get Errol Spence Jr, shifts focus on 154 and wants Charlo vs Castano winner

Terence Crawford vs Errol Spence Jr- a fight that millions of boxing fans have been wanting for years. It’s without a doubt, one of the most anticipated of this generation but unfortunately, little progress has been made towards legitimizing the talks and making Crawford vs Spence a reality. And now, even Crawford himself is seemingly losing interest in the fight, saying that he is ‘done’ trying to get Spence and would rather take on the Jermell Charlo vs Brian Castano winner as his second option.

I’d love to get the Jermell and Castano winner: Terence Crawford aiming for the undisputed championship at 154

A former unified light-welterweight world champion who held the WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and WBO titles, Terence Crawford (37-0, 28 KOs) moved up to welterweight in 2018 and clinched the WBO belt against Jeff Horn. Since then, “Bud” has marked five successful title defences, against José Benavidez Jr, Amir Khan, Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Kell Brook and the most recent one against Shawn Porter in November last year.

Taking on the WBC and IBF titleholder Errol Spence Jr had been a step that Crawford was willing to take and a similar interest was seen from his former promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank. However, the two have split up, with Crawford suing the promotion. Spence, meanwhile, is gearing up for a fight against WBA (Super) champion Yordenis Ugas on 16th April.

During the final press conference for the Kell Brook vs Amir Khan fight last weekend, “Bud” said that if he can’t land a fight against the Spence vs Ugas winner, he will shift his focus on the light middleweight division and will go up to take on the winner of the upcoming Jermell Charlo vs Brian Castano rematch.

Charlo vs Castano 2, the upcoming undisputed championship clash at 154 will see WBA, WBC, and IBF champion Jermell Charlo taking on the WBO titleholder Brian Castano from Argentina on 19th March. Taking on the winner of the fight means Crawford is aiming directly at the undisputed crown at light middleweight.

“If I can’t get the Spence-Ugas winner, I’d love to get the Jermell and Castano winner,” Crawford spoke to Behind the Gloves, “I can have that fight and be undisputed at 154.”

“I want that fight. If it happens, it happens. I’ve been calling for it for years now. If it don’t, it don’t,” the 34-year-old commented on getting the Spence fight. [H/T Boxingscene.com]
