The 23-time grand slam winner shared on her Instagram her heartbreaking decision to opt out of the event due to her hamstring injury.

After considering the opinion of her doctors, the legend decided to give it a rest this year. She will be taking some time off to allow her body to heal. In a letter to her fans, she mentioned how much she will miss them and their cheers but she will be back at the court once she is healed entirely.

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Williams wrote in a statement on Instagram.

“New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favourite places to play – I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone from afar.”

“Thank you for your continued support and love. I’ll see you soon.”

The former World No.1 said the injury had not completely healed after she was forced to retire hurt in the first round at Wimbledon.

Her injury flared up when she participated at the Wimbledon. The tennis legend was forced to withdraw after playing just the first round due to pain.

Serena had also given the Cincinnati Masters a miss to get into form for the Flushing Meadows but did not go according to the plan.

Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou shared how the doctors explicitly mentioned that Serena would be taking a big risk if she continues to play in this condition. Her team had a reason with her and request her to take some time off because she is too competitive and does not like ‘giving up’.

Serena has won the US Open six times, and it is a big loss for the tennis fans not to see her play at the court this year.
