The 27-year-old came into the Premier League following a record transfer from Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. Since his arrival, he has struggled with injuries and has been unable to make a consistent impact.

Over the years, Mendy has slid down the pecking order at the Cityzens with Pep Guardiola usually preferring to play an inverted full-back in the form of Joao Cancelo or opting to the make-shift Oleksandr Zinchenko.

The statement from the Chesire Police, who are conducting the investigation, read:

“Benjamin Mendy, aged 27, has been charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to three complainants over the age of 16 and are alleged to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.

With police investigation taking place behind the scenes, the defending Premier League champions have decided to suspend the player altogether. Mendy had a promising pre-season and even made appearances in the club’s opening fixtures of the season.

He clocked the entire 90-minutes during their 1-0 defeat against Leicester in the Community Shield. He was on the field for 79 minutes in Manchester City’s opening Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur in London. He was moved to the bench for their first home match of the season against Norwich.

The club released a statement after announcing the suspension of the player. The statement read:

“Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.

“The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is, therefore, unable to make further comment until that process is complete.”

Manchester City will next host Arsenal in the Premier League at the Etihad.
