Russell Wilson’s tenure in Denver comes to an end after two difficult seasons

Russell Wilson was released by the Denver Broncos on Monday, concluding a difficult NFL season. Russell Wilson left two years after joining the organization via a high-profile deal from the Seattle Seahawks.

“Today, we informed Russell Wilson of his release as we begin the new league year,” announced Broncos general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton.

The Broncos offered Russell a wage cut to keep him on the team, but he declined though the head coach wasn’t pleased with it. Wilson’s departure will financially impact the Broncos because they supposedly owe him $85 million throughout the next two seasons. The organisation will save money by letting him go, as his 2022 deal guaranteed $37 million in further compensation.

In the beginning, Wilson—a nine-time Pro Bowl player and Seahawks Super Bowl champion—was thought to be the answer to Denver’s quarterback problems. But his time with the Broncos did not live up to the conjecture.

Russell Wilson thanked the Broncos and the Denver community in his reflections on his time there, saying, “The city will always hold a special place in my heart.”

Russell was consistently undercut by Sean Payton, and the quarterback seized the chance to retaliate in kind. He made it quite apparent in his farewell note what he thought of the manager by excluding any mention of his head coach with the Broncos. Whatever Sean Payton does, he understands that the Broncos will now be entirely his team, success or failure.

Denver Broncos @Broncos posted on Twitter/X with the caption: “We’ve notified QB Russell Wilson that he will be released after the league year begins on March 13. A statement from GM George Paton and HC Sean Payton”

Wilson did better in 2023 under coach Payton, but concerns about his future remained. Eventually, his time with the Broncos came to an end when he was benched for the final two regular season games.
