Jalen Ramsey’s Broken Wrist Highlights Steelers’ Thursday Night Injury Crisis

Must read

Jalen Ramsey’s toughness was on full display during the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 30–27 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. The veteran defensive back revealed that he fractured his right wrist during Pittsburgh’s opening defensive series, yet remained on the field for every defensive snap and recorded eight tackles.

The injury could now create a major selection dilemma for the Steelers. Pittsburgh has only four days to recover before travelling to face the Cleveland Browns on Thursday Night Football, leaving Ramsey with limited time to prepare his wrist and determine whether he can safely contribute. He has been listed as questionable after being classified as a limited participant during walkthrough work.

Ramsey’s decision to continue against Cincinnati was remarkable even by his standards. The break occurred almost immediately, but he did not leave the game or noticeably reduce his involvement. He finished with four solo tackles among his eight total stops while helping the Steelers hold on in a tightly contested AFC North matchup.

The immediate concern is not simply pain tolerance. A cornerback needs to use his hands constantly to jam receivers, contest catches, tackle in space and protect himself during contact. A protective cast or club could reduce the risk of further damage, but it could also limit Ramsey’s ability to grab, redirect and finish plays. The Steelers must therefore determine whether he can remain effective without turning the injury into a more serious problem.

Ramsey has made his intention clear. Asked whether he would attempt to play, he indicated that he would try, while also acknowledging that the wrist is a genuine injury and that he must be able to protect it. His availability will likely depend on whether doctors approve a cast that stabilizes the fracture without preventing him from performing his responsibilities.

The situation becomes more urgent because Pittsburgh’s secondary is already dealing with personnel concerns. Nickel corner Brandin Echols entered concussion protocol after the Bengals game, potentially leaving the Steelers short of experienced defensive backs against Cleveland. If Ramsey is ruled out, players such as Echols and Asante Samuel could be asked to absorb additional snaps, depending on medical clearance and the final game-day roster.

Ramsey’s history explains why the Steelers are not dismissing the possibility of a Thursday appearance. During the Los Angeles Rams’ 2021 Super Bowl run, he later said he played through injuries to both AC joints for roughly 10 games, including Super Bowl LVI. He has also maintained a streak of 47 consecutive regular-season starts since returning from meniscus surgery in 2023, underlining his remarkable availability.

However, previous examples of playing through pain cannot replace medical judgment. The Steelers must balance Ramsey’s competitive mindset against the possibility of worsening the fracture or compromising his effectiveness. A defensive back who cannot tackle confidently or use his injured hand may create a weakness opponents can target.

For Cleveland, Ramsey’s status could influence the entire offensive game plan. If he plays with a club, the Browns may test him with quick throws, contested catches and designed runs toward his side. If he sits, Pittsburgh could rely on softer coverage, extra safety help or less aggressive defensive calls.

Ramsey wants to play, but the final decision will be based on protection, function and risk. His willingness is unquestioned. Whether his broken wrist can safely withstand another NFL game on a short week remains the Steelers’ most important injury question before kickoff.
