The 2020/21 Premier League has begun and new rules have been applied ahead of the new season. One of the newly implemented rules is the new handball law.
Application of new handball laws in Premier League 2020/21 season
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has presented a new law of handball which is ready to be enforced from this season.
An explanation was there regarding the method of awarding a penalty from a handball on the Premier League website which read,
“To penalise a player for handball the match officials must have clear evidence that the ball has struck the player’s arm below the bottom of the armpit and in the red zone indicated below.”
“The boundary between the shoulder and the arm is now defined by the bottom of the armpit.”
Previously when the ball would hit the shoulder, it would be considered as a foul. But after the introduction of the new laws, no player would be penalised for the same.
IFAB has also stated that goals scored with the arms would be ruled out immediately even if it is unintentionally done.
The statement on the Premier League website also read, “An accidental handball by an attacking player or team-mate will only be penalised if it occurs immediately before a goal or a goalscoring opportunity.”
“If an attacking player accidentally touches the ball with their hand or arm and then scores a goal, or the ball goes to another attacking player and they immediately score, this is a handball offence.”
If a goal is scored or the ball goes to another attacking player after the accidental touch on the ball by the attacking player with their arms, the goal would be ruled out instantly.
IFAB also clarified about which incident should not be considered as a handball offence. The statement says, “But it is not a handball offence if after an accidental handball the ball travels some distance via a pass or a dribble, or there are several passes before the goal or goalscoring opportunity.”
It is unfortunate for the fans as they will not be witnessing the matches from the ground. However, it is needless to say they would cheer for their favourite teams from their homes as the new Premier League season begins.
