Lionel Messi has reportedly decided to call his time with FC Barcelona. The 33-year-old desires to activate a clause in his contract which will allow him to leave for free at the end of each season.

The Argentinian announced his intention to activate the clause through fax to the officials of the club. However, according to the club, the said clause expired on June 10 itself for this year.

A legal battle is anticipated in order to attain clarity regarding Messi’s volatile clause situation. Messi will apparently skip the testing and the upcoming pre-season training with teammates as well.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner had a public fallout with sporting director Eric Abidal. To add to the off-field issues, Barcelona had one of their worst seasons in recent history after finishing trophyless.

The season saw two managerial sackings with Ernesto Valverde and Quique Setien both exiting the club owing to poor results.

The final nail in the coffin was Barcelona’s humiliating 8-2 defeat at the hands of eventual champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Moreover, the Argentinian was not impressed with the club’s decision to appoint Ronald Koeman as the new head coach. The Dutch manager is planning a major overhaul at the club and has reportedly informed Messi’s close friend Luis Suarez that his services won’t be required at the club anymore.
