International football saw one of its brightest peaks last week after two exhilarating finals giving birth to iconic wins.

Lionel Messi was awarded his first International silverware as he led the Argentina outfit to victory over Brazil to claim the Copa America. Meanwhile, across the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, Italy defeated England on penalties at the Wembley Stadium to win their second Euros.

The fabled rivalry between the two historic nations of Italy and Argentina has not seen a match since 1990. During their last encounter, which was the semi-finals of the World Cup, Maradona led the South American nation to victory to advance into the finals.

This might be the perfect occasion to honour the legendary player after his death last year in November. It might just be written in the stars given that the two national teams in question are the ones Maradona was associated with the most in his illustrious career.

Maradona managed to script his name in Argentinian folklore with his breathtaking display in the 1986 World Cup, which they went on to win. On the other side lies Italy, a nation where Maradona spent the fair of his club career through Napoli.

CONMEBOL extends the initative to honour Maradona

According to Barca Blaugranes, the South American football body took the first step and requested the UEFA for a potential match-up between these two sides. The European football body is yet to comment or respond to the request.

Due to fixture congestion, it would be difficult for the fixture to be held this year, if it’s given the green light. 2022 is being speculated as the ideal time for the match to kick-off as a potential preview to the World Cup in Qatar.

Both the teams played exemplary football and reached the final after heroics in the penalty shootouts.
