Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly on the pursuit for RB Leipzig centre back Dayot Upamecano, as Ole Gunnar Solskjær aims to freshens up the squad for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
Dutch midfielder Donny Van de Beek of Ajax has been speculated to complete his move to Old Trafford anytime soon. However, new sources from ESPN have cited that United are likely to bring in Dayot Upamecano to the squad, in an attempt to strengthen the back line.
United eyeing RB Leipzig centre back Dayot Upamecano
Dayot Upamecano has been stellar for RB Leipzig in the last season, and was vital behind the impressive run of Julien Nagelsmann’s side in the UEFA Champions League, where they reached the semis. He made eight appearances in the UCL, in addition to 28 in the Bundesliga.
Alongside former teammate Timo Werner, the forward who recently swapped sides with Chelsea, Upamecano also signed a latest contract with Leipzig, extending till 2023.
However according to ESPN sources, that hasn’t stopped the Red Devils gaffer from pursuing the young Frenchman, as an youthful defence option to partner up beside club captain Harry Maguire.
United veterans Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are all expected to exit from Old Trafford in the transfer window, and both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly haven’t been up to the mark in the last season. A fresh defender like Upamecano is an option Solskjær is very much willing to exercise, plus the Champions League experience being the cherry on top.
Upamecano has also been linked with fellow German club Bayern Munich, as well as Arsenal and Barcelona earlier this year.
“There are clubs that want me,” the 21 year old said back in February, “I will speak with my agents and my parents at the end of the season and we will make the right decision.”
Upamecano arrived at Leipzig from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in 2017, and has made 155 appearances for them across all competitions, scoring 4 times.
