With 103 laps remaining in the race, Rudy Fugle made a genius pit call. He decided to bring William Byron in for an early pit stop before the rest of the field. This strategic move allowed Byron to gain an advantage, slicing through the pack with renewed speed and grip when he rejoined the track. As a result, Byron surged ahead and ultimately clinched the victory.
William Byron mention in his interview that if he gets a little bit of what he needs he can win a race. As proven at Martinsville a help with tires and strategy of his crew chief helped Byron to pass everycar “I just took off like a rocket.” That was evident when Byron jumped from 18th to 1st at Martinsville.
Fugle expressed a moment of pride
In a post-race interview, Fugle humbly credited William Byron’s driving skills for the win, emphasizing that the car needed to be competitive for the strategy to pay off. He stated:
“I think we all knew what laps we wanted to pit on, and as a group, we talked about it. William just had a lot of grip when he came out of the pits, so he passed all those cars in front of him. So, I put it on him—you know, we can talk about the call, but the reality is we had to have a car good enough, and he did it when he got on track. I’m really, really proud of him.”
