The New England Patriots recently signed T.C. McCartney as their new Quarterback coach. The side had a lackluster season and failed to fill in the quarterback position despite chasing Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe, who are most likely departing the team. Bill O’Brien had served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in a dual role last year and his departure vacated both spots. So, in comes TC McCartney.
Who is TC McCartney?
TC McCartney is a former member of the Cleveland Browns and worked with the team for the last four years. At the franchise, McCartney worked alongside Alex Van Pelt, who recently became the new Patriots’ offensive coordinator to fill in O’Brien’s another vacated role.
The Patriots have been open about signing associates of Alex Van Pelt. It is noted that McCartney is the third ex-Browns assistant coach hired alongside his coordinator and offensive line coach Scott Peters. He is also the fourth addition overall with ties to Cleveland including personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith.
TC McCartney’s coaching career
McCartney only had one season as a quarterbacks coach and has worked for the Denver Broncos in 2019 as offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello’s coordinator and head coach Vic Fangio. During that season, the Broncos finished 28th in passing yards while tallying the fewest touchdowns (16) in the NFL and McCartney collaborated with Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, and Brandon Allen.
In the next season, McCartney moved to Cleveland, where he worked for four seasons. In 2020 and 2021, he served as an offensive assistant before taking on the role as tight ends coach in 2022 and 2023.
In the NFL, McCartney has also worked as an offensive assistant in Cleveland in 2014 and as a quality control coach for San Francisco in 2015 and again in 2017–18. He’s worked collegiately at LSU (graduate assistant, 2011, 2016) and Colorado (graduate assistant, 2012-13). McCartney spent his collegiate years of 2007-10 at LSU on the roster as a quarterback.
It is worth noting that The Patriots ranked 28th in passing yards and 27th in passing touchdowns while throwing the second-most interceptions in the NFL last season under offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Bill O’Brien.
We will have to wait and see how New England Patriots perform under TC McCartney.
