The relation between Teófimo López and Top Rank has gone sourer and sourer in recent times.
The WBA (Super), WBO, and IBF lightweight titleholder had already clarified that he was not happy with Top Rank back in February, and threatened to leave the promotion if his terms were not met, just like Floyd Mayweather.
Meanwhile, the promotional and broadcasting rights for his upcoming title defense against George Kambosos Jr went to Triller with their winning bid at over $6 million, which will land Teófimo and his team a staggering $3,911,700, as per the IBF ruling, the pugilist will earn a 65% cut, while Top Rank still taking 20%.
Moreover, the recent revelations about Top Rank president and Bob Arum’s stepson Todd duBoef and his conversations with DAZN regarding the fight fueled a spark in Teófimo, who took to Twitter to make it clear to the prez that their partnership was soon to terminate.
God’s got better plans for me: Teófimo López looking to bid adieu to Top Rank
Now, as the Kambosos fight approaches, Teófimo is dead straight to part ways with Top Rank after the match and become a free agent, as well as hints that he is looking forward to starting his own Takeover Promotions.
The unified champion recently made an appearance on Sirius XM radio, where Teófimo made it clear that Ryan Kavanaugh’s Triller is where his destiny is leading him to.
“If they [Top Rank] could have treated us with respect, they could’ve done things properly like we should have in this business, then we wouldn’t be in this situation right now,” Teófimo said on the show.
Triller, who outbid both Top Rank as well as Matchroom at the IBF bid, will be landing Teófimo a career-high purse, something that makes the 23-year-old become a free agent as soon as the Kambosos fight is over, and even threatens to take legal action if Top Rank doesn’t terminate the contract.
“Honestly, God’s got better plans for me right now and it’s going towards Triller,” Teófimo went on, “I see myself within this fight or my next fight, I’ll be a free agent.”
“There’s so much proof to get out of this Top Rank contract and they gave me the golden ticket. Todd duBoef gave me the golden ticket by doing so. They already dug a bigger hold than needed to.”
Moreover, the pugilist hints that once parting ways with Top Rank, he aims to kickstart his own boxing promotion.
“The Takeover Promotions will be in effect and it’ll be Takeover Promotions times a network, God willing and that’s what I’m looking forward to. ESPN, PBC, Triller, the list could go on and on. DAZN, I mean there’s so many guys and I know that I bring all that to the platform,” added Teófimo.
