American actress Sydney Sweeney has gained prominence through her portrayal of Cassie Howard on the ongoing HBO teen drama series Euphoria. However, unbeknownst to many, Sweeney has a background in mixed martial arts and has even garnered experience in training with none other than Ronda Rousey.
Training since she was 14, Sydne Sweeney found her success in MMA at 18 years of age
Hailing from Spokane, Washington, Sweeney made her breakthrough in 2018 in the Netflix series Everything Sucks, in which she played Emaline, followed by the characters of Eden in the Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale as well as Alice in the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects, both in the same year, before landing her role of Cassie in Euphoria a year later.
Nevertheless, it was her TikTok that revealed that Sweeney’s skills aren’t only limited to the silver screen, she is also a successful car mechanic and in an interview with Marie Claire back in 2018, she revealed about her MMA background, which started when she was 14 years old and only four years later, how she defeated everyone in her first competition even though they were all above her weight class.
“I’m trained in mixed martial arts. I started when I was 14 and did my first competition at 18. It was a grappling competition against all guys a weight category above me, and I got first place. Those guys were probably saying, ‘Oh, we didn’t want to hurt her,’ but they were definitely trying. Everyone broke a sweat!” Sweeney, who is 5’3″ and weighs roughly 119 pounds, said at that time.
The acting career eventually came in the way, but Sweeney is back in training MMA
Furthermore, At the Kelly Clarkson show last year, Sweeney said that the credit goes to her parents who wanted her to fall into love with “as many things as possible”, and MMA was one of the things that the actress found her heart set in. Sweeney also revealed that she had the chance to train with the mentors of WWE superstar and former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey
However, her success in acting became a hurdle that was impacting her MMA training, as she also revealed that during her work, she isn’t allowed to train. But, a post on her Instagram yesterday has garnered the attention of her fans, as Sweeney shared a compilation clip from her MMA training, also adding that she ‘missed this’ suggesting that the actress is possibly back in training.
