There is no doubt that the Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk rematch is one of the most anticipated boxing fights of this year. The two were seen in action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London on 25th September last year, when Joshua lost his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles to the reigning unified heavyweight champion Usyk via unanimous decision. Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has been engaged in materializing the rematch and claims that the fight is targeted for May or June this year, taking place somewhere in the Middle East.
There’s nothing that’s going to stop Anthony Joshua from taking that fight: Eddie Hearn positive on the Usyk rematch
In the wake of his undisputed heavyweight title fight with the reigning WBC champion Tyson Fury falling apart, Anthony Joshua found himself taking on the former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Despite being the heavy favorite, it was Usyk who stupendously outboxed AJ and became the new unified heavyweight champion.
Talks surrounding Joshua vs Usyk 2 has been going on for months and Eddie Hearn, who prefers the fight taking place on English soil, is ready to opt for a venue in the Middle East if the money is right, and has been in contact with Usyk’s manager Egis Klimas about hosting the bout in May or June.
“I’ve just come back from the Middle East. We’ve had numerous meetings with different countries in the Middle East to stage that fight,” Hearn said on the DAZN Boxing Show, “Egis Klimas and Oleksandr Usyk are actually in the UK this week, so we’re going to sit down with them and just talk through everything.”
“We’re getting to a stage now where we’re going to start thinking about securing a date which will be the end of May or June. There’s nothing that’s going to stop Anthony Joshua from taking that fight,” the British promoter added. [H/T BoxingNews24.com]
