The Spanish Olympic Committee, meanwhile, recognized the failed test in an official statement, although they did not mention Barquero’s name in the statement and referred the figure skater as a “Spanish athlete”.

“From the Spanish Olympic Committee we are waiting for the result of the counter-test, a result that every athlete has the right to request,” the statement from the committee further added.

The case of Barquero will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Aside from her, three more athletes had tested positive- Iranian Alpine skier Hossein Saveh Shemshaki, cross-country skier Valentyna Kaminska and bobsledder Lidiia Hunko, both of whom are from Ukraine.

The center of attention in this year’s doping scandal was of course the case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva. The 15-year-old Russian was found to have traces of the banned heart drug Trimetazidine, also known as TMZ in her urine samples. The CAS, although granted her permission to continue her participation due to her age, Valieva may still be stripped off from the gold she won in the figure skating team event.
