Former WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia (21-0, 18 KOs), who recently marked a year away from the squared circle, is reportedly setting up for a comeback fight this April against former IBF super featherweight champion Tevin Farmer (30-5-1, 6 KOs), who is also on a lengthy two year hiatus from the ring, and the bout will likely head for Las Vegas.
Last year, Ryan Garcia had defeated Luke Campbell on 2nd January to kickstart the year by winning the WBC interim lightweight belt. However, since then, Garcia has been unable to return to the ring twice this year, first pulling out against Javier Fortuna due to mental health issues in April, followed by suffering a hand injury which cancelled the JoJo Diaz fight in November.
Last month, Garcia opened up about his much awaited comeback and named Isaac Cruz, who rose to the limelight with a brilliant performance as a world title contender against WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis, as his opponent. It was a narrow loss for Cruz against “Tank” Davis and to the global boxing fandom, the 23-year-old Mexican is seen as a future world champion.
Y’all will see a new better version of me: Tevin Farmer confident ahead of possible Ryan Garcia matchup
After staying undefeated for nearly seven years, Tevin Farmer lost his IBF belt against JoJo Diaz on 30th January 2020, nearly two years since winning the vacant title against Billy Dib in August 2018. After four successful title defenses, it was Diaz who gave Farmer his first loss in seven years, marking a unanimous decision win in Florida.
While eyebrows have been raising for Garcia going after Farmer over Cruz, the “American Idol” who was among the top five junior lightweights, took to Twitter to say that the fans will see a ‘better’ version of him in the ring.
“Facts. They must’ve forgot. I’ll remind them. And this time around I won’t have to literally drain myself to make weight. And I will cut weight the right way. Most people don’t see behind the scenes. They only see us Fight night. Y’all will see a new better version of me”, Farmer tweeted.
