Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan tested positive for COVID-19, the Premier League club said on Monday.

Manchester City pair Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez are two of the three players who returned positive tests as recently as last month.

Both City stars are, therefore, doubtful for the opening round of fixtures for the new Premier League season, having missed the game against Wolves on Monday, September 21.

There were 1,574 players and staff tested for the novel coronavirus from Sept. 14-20 at the top-flight clubs.

Premier League
Gundogan will miss the first two fixtures of the 2020/21 season.

Gundogan is likely to miss three matches for City while he self-isolates, including Monday’s league clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Thursday’s League Cup tie against Bournemouth and Sunday’s league game against Leicester City.

Gundogan is a regular starter in City’s midfield and made 49 appearances in all competitions last term as well as being a key part of the treble-winning side the year before.

Gundogan also started this season on international duty with Germany – playing in both 1-1 Nations League draws against Spain and Switzerland and scoring in the game against the Swiss.

Manchester City gave no further details of Gundogan’s condition, only adding: “Everyone at the club wishes Ilkay a speedy recovery.”

After winning the Premier League for two successive seasons, City stumbled last year as Jurgen Klopp’s side raced away with the title.

Coronavirus still a persistent issue in the Premier League

Players or club staff who have tested positive will self-isolate for a period of 10 days.

The Premier League provides this aggregated information for the purposes of competition integrity and transparency.

No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the League and results will be made public after each round of testing.

The first two rounds of tests this season produced three positive cases from 1,605 tests and four from 2,131 respectively.

The new Premier League season resumed just 48 days after Liverpool won their first-ever Premier League due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In normal circumstances, teams are granted a three-month break from competitive action, with the league season usually concluding in May and starting up again in August.
