There is not much chance for Caleb Plant to overpower Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight crown, but the IBF titleholder wants another thing confirmed- a $10 million fight purse.
There is no doubt that taking on the number one pound for pound boxer in the world will be the most challenging match of Plant’s boxing career, which is targeted for a September date with Plant’s IBF belt up against Canelo’s WBC, WBA (Super) and WBO titles.
While Canelo is the by default favourite to win the fight and clinch the undisputed crown at 168, Plant recently mentioned that he is targeting upwards of $10 million out of the fight, way higher than what Canelo’s recent opponents Avni Yıldırım and Billy Joe Saunders earlier this year.
Canelo vs Plant: “the numbers would be outrageous”, claims the latter
Although demanding such a high purse from the fight is sure to raise eyebrows, as well as may land Plant in a dispute regarding negotiations with his management at Premier Boxing Champions [PBC], the American boxer explains why he deserves the $10+ million pocket- his local supporters.
“I got a much bigger fanbase in the United States; I do much more viewership than any of his past opponents,” in a recent interview with Fighthype, “Sweethands” insisted that he will draw more attention compared to Yıldırım and Saunders, both of whom are very less popular on the US soil.
The 28-year-old was last seen in action against Caleb Truax on 30th January at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles, marking his third IBF title defense. Citing the numbers from the Truax fight, Plant insisted that having his name against Canelo will blow out the PPV sales.
“My last fight [against Caleb Truax] did two million views against somebody who if I had a real name in there with me, the numbers would be outrageous,” the undefeated pugilist went on, “I got the highest watched FS1 show of all time with almost a million views.”
“I’ve got a great team around me. You don’t see anybody out with 21 fights in the position I’m in with or without the Canelo fight. The viewership, what I get paid, nothing. We got a great team around me, and we’re going to do whatever we can to make that happen,” said Plant about the Canelo fight,” Plant added.
