Paul Scholes, the former Manchester United stalwart is set to become the manager of Salford City after manager Graham Alexander was sacked as announced on Monday.
Paul Scholes takes charge of Salford City
Paul Scholes the former Manchester United midfielder is set to be appointed as the interim manager. He is one of the owners of the club along with the ‘Class of 92’ members, and former United team-mates David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Gary and Phil Neville.
Warren Joyce, Salford Head coach of youth development could have taken over but he is currently isolating. He is the favourite to take the charge after he completes the isolation.
The club’s official statement read:
“Paul Scholes will act as the interim head coach while the club looks to secure a new manager. Warren Joyce, currently in isolation, will join Paul once he is able to.”
Graham Alexander had guided Salford City and helped them get the promotion to English Football League in his first season in 2018-19. But the performance of the club slumped in the current season.
Salford City are enjoying the unbeaten streak but their results have been disappointing. In their recent fixture at home, they only managed to draw the game 2-2 against Tranmere City.
The visitors had appealed for the match to be called off due to lack of key players amid the pandemic. They made a comeback after trailing by two goals and took home one point each.
The sacking of Graham Alexander was announced on Monday after his team’s performance, playing style have not been up to the mark and have been poor.
Salford City are currently positioned fifth on the league table. In the last season, they won seven of the final 20 games and were out of the play-off zone.
The ex-Manchester United player has the experience of managing a team for only 31 days when he took the charge of his hometown club Oldham Athletic in 2019. His first assignment would see Salford City becoming the visitors when they face Port Vale away from home.
