Kansas Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was recently involved in a bizarre incident as his helmet was damaged during Saturday night’s game against Miami Dolphins. A huge chunk of the plastic shell came off flying in a collision and brought an unusual halt to the game.

Apparently, Mahomes’ helmet was extremely cold and the plastic cracked and left a clear hole to the left of Mahomes’ forehead. This is not a usual sight to see for the NFL fans.

The officials looked baffled and were uncertain how to move ahead with the incident after noting Mahomes’ equipment issue. They briefly decided to bring the game to a haltwithout charging a timeout, for Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire to run out a backup helmet.

Peacock’s Kaylee Hartung reported the Chiefs tried to vulture the padding, then the facemask from Mahomes’ cracked helmet to make his new one more comfortable. However, ran out of time before Mahomes had to take the field again.

Patrick Mahomes reflects on the incident

Following the game, Mahomes stated that he had never seen that happen to a football helmet before, and he had also never played in conditions so cold before.

“I have not,” Mahomes said. “I’m sure it had to do with it being really cold.”

Additionally, Patrick Mahomes said he didn’t realize his helmet was broken until teammates told him, and that he wanted to stay in the game even with a compromised helmet.

“I didn’t know what happened in the moment but I got in the huddle and everyone was telling me, but I was like, ‘I got y’all, but I’m not coming out of the game, so we can figure it out on the sideline,’” Mahomes said. “It was a first for me.”

Mahomes said that the helmet was so cold that it was very difficult to get on his head.

“They have a backup that’s out there. We have to talk about where we store the backup because it was frozen — when I tried to put it on it was completely frozen. I couldn’t put it on,” Mahomes said.

The Chiefs came up short on the first-and-goal, eventually kicking a 21-yard field goal to go up 19-7. The Chiefs went on to secure a decisive victory with a 26-7 outcome.
