“Pat Bev calls out Lakers fans for hurting their players’ value “They talk so bad about their players that they actually decrease their value. So now, when a trade comes, ain’t nobody just giving you sh*t. No one’s trying to help the Los Angeles Lakers. We know you guys want this guy—he’s a second-rounder for every other team, but to the Lakers, he’s two first rounds. But when you have a fan base, a guy shoots bad, and they crush guys, they decrease their value.””

Pat Beverley’s Context and Background

Pat Beverley’s comments came in response to the Lakers’ recent trade of D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith. Some Lakers fans were critical of the trade, believing that the team gave up too much for Finney-Smith. Beverley, who played for the Lakers for half a season, has experienced firsthand the intense scrutiny from the fanbase.

Impact on Trade Negotiations

Pat Beverley argued that the constant criticism from Lakers fans makes it harder for the team to get good deals in trades. He mentioned that players who struggle with the Lakers’ high expectations often see their trade value drop significantly. This phenomenon sometimes referred to as the “Lakers tax,” means that the team has to give up more assets to acquire players compared to other teams.

Examples of Criticism

Beverley cited examples of players like Taurean Prince and Malik Beasley, who faced heavy criticism from Lakers fans during their stints with the team. Beasley, in particular, struggled with his shooting and faced backlash from the fanbase. Pat Beverley pointed out that Beasley has since improved his performance with the Detroit Pistons, shooting over 40% from three-point range.
