The year 2020 is seeing probably the most unprecedented event in the global football scene- a possible exit of Lionel Messi from FC Barcelona. The Argentine, who has become one and the same with the La Liga giants in the last sixteen years, is now speculated of wanting a move away from the club, and some of the biggest names in EUropean club football are rumoured to be the 33 year old forward’s next destination.

The trophyless 2019-20 season, and to add salt to the wound- the devastating 8-2 loss against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League has impacted the Catalan captain’s decision, which is going to be a massive blow to Barcelona.

We need to go forward: Modrić recalls Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Madrid

Two years back, the biggest news out of La Liga was Cristiano Ronaldo’s move away to Juventus. The Portuguese powerhouse joined the Serie A giants after spending nine years with the Galacticos.

Speaking to AFP, Modrić compared the current situation in Barcelona to Ronaldo’s exit from Santiago Bernabeu.

“It would be a huge loss. Like when Cristiano left. But you can’t think about the past. It’s football and that’s it,” Modrić said in the interview.

With both the two posterboys for Spanish top flight football gone, La Liga’s reputation may fall, but the Croatian claims fellow Barca players would get the limelight.

The 34 year old went on, “If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league. But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.”

“When Ronaldo left, the same thing happened, the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and La Liga without Messi,” he concluded.
