“Ty Lue says LeBron James personally called him after Lakers sent low-ball coaching offer: “He called me twice… ‘What do I have to do? I said, ‘No, I want them to respect me… I don’t want to have to go to you to get my deal done; if they don’t respect me like I should be respected, then it’s okay.””

The Low-Ball Offer

The Lakers’ offer to Ty Lue in 2019 was reportedly for three years and $18 million, which was significantly lower than what Lue was expecting. The offer also included stipulations that Lue found disrespectful, such as the Lakers wanting to pick his coaching staff. This offer was seen as a step backwards for Lue, who had already proven his worth by leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a championship in 2016.

LeBron James, who had a strong connection with Lue from their time together in Cleveland, was reportedly upset by the Lakers’ offer. James called Lue twice to express his frustration and offer his help in negotiating a better deal. Despite James’ intervention, Lue decided to decline the offer, stating that he wanted the Lakers to respect him and his coaching style.

Ty Lue’s Decision

Lue’s decision to turn down the Lakers’ offer was based on his desire for respect and fair treatment. He felt that the offer was a slap in the face, especially considering his accomplishments as a coach. Instead of accepting the low-ball offer, Lue chose to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers before the 2020-21 season.
