Jon Lester celebrates Cubs farewell with beers worth $47,000 for fans

Jon Lester has made tons of memories with Chicago Cubs in the past five years, yet the pitcher wanted to etch one more memorable instance with the team as he spends more than $47,000 to treat beers to the fans.

Jon Lester has spent six decorated seasons with the Cubs, including a World Series triumph in 2016 as well as two All-Star picks in 2016 and 2018. However, the veteran’s spell with the team had the curtain call on Friday as the Cubs rejected $25 million mutual option for 2021 on Friday.

Now a free agent, Lester wanted to make sure he commemorates his final days with the team and decided to catch up with the Cubs supporters for one last time, this time however outside the stadium.

Jon Lester treats Cubs fans with his favourite Miller Lite beer

Last week, the player made a tweet where he announced that he would treat fans Miller Lite across four Chicago bars- Hopsmith Tavern, The Lodge, Butch McGuire’s and She-nannigans.

“Regardless of what’s next I want to thank the fans for the past 6 years. So this weekend (10.30-11.1) Im buying y’all my favorite beer. Make a res at @Hopsmithchicago @LodgeTavern @ButchMcGuires @ShenannigansHOB & your 1st @MillerLite is on me. Just tell em to put it on #JonsTab”

On Sunday, a total of 4,838 Miller Lites were treated to the fans, which collectively billed to $31,082.63 and $16,012.27 in gratuity. Lester shared photos of the bill amounts on Twitter as well, including the 34% tip, symbolising his kit number for the Cubs.

“Shout out to all the bars, their staff, and those cheers-ing from afar! Whether this is goodbye or see you next year, I love you Chicago! #JonsTab” Lester added.

While a major chunk of the fanbase appreciated Lester’s gesture, several Netizens criticised the player’s decision to invite people over to bars amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cubs finished first in the NL Central with 34-26 and were defeated by Miami Marlins 0-2 in the Wild Card Series.
