Conor McGregor won his first title when he fought Chad Mendes in the main event of UFC 189 on 11 July 2015. He fought a back and forth fight against Mendes before finishing him at the end of the second round. He became the interim featherweight champion After defeating Mendes and was all set to unify his title against the then champion Jose Aldo.

On 10 August 2015, it was announced that McGregor would face Jose Aldo for the UFC Featherweight Championship at UFC 194. The fight was advertised as the biggest fight in featherweight history and also as one of the biggest fights in UFC history. Conor McGregor gave justice to the moment in his very own style and started his iconic journey in the UFC. He knocked out Jose Also in a mere 13 seconds of the very first round. He knocked out Aldo with the very first punch he threw. Conor then went on to become a two-division champion after he defeated then lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.

Conor now is on a two-fight losing streak. He lost back-to-back fights against top lightweight contender Dustin Poirier. The duo has fought a trilogy of fights between them within the span of seven years. Dustin has won two of those fights whereas Conor has won the first fight of their series.

In 2021 Conor rematched Dustin Poirer at UFC 257 after seven long years. The duo first fought in 2014 where Conor had knocked Dustin out in the very first round of the fight. In the rematch Conor was very friendly towards Dustin which was very unlikely of Conor who is known for his trash-talking and mind games. The result of the match didn’t go in Conor’s favor as he was knocked out by Dustin in the second round of the fight. The third fight between the duo took place at UFC 264. The fight wasn’t going well for Conor this time either but then at the end of the first round he broke his ankle in a bizarre accident and the fight was waved off by the doctors declaring Dustin as the winner by TKO.

Can Conor Mcgregor get a title shot?

Now Conor McGregor is recovering from his injury and is planning to make a comeback by the summer of 2022. He is eyeing the top fighters and is majorly planning to get a title fight which at this point seems pretty hard considering the state of the division.

The UFC lightweight division is stacked by some of the best fighters in the world. The champion Charles Oliveira looks unstoppable at the moment. The no.1 contender Justin Gaethje is seemingly next in line for a title shot.

Conor is ranked no.9 in the UFC lightweight Division and the only interesting fight that can lead him up to the top of the division is the former title challenger Michael Chandler. The duo has been engaging quite a lot on social media and are seemingly interested to fight soon. But the matchup is going to be a hard one for Conor considering the skills Chandler possesses. Chandler is an all-around MMA fighter with amazing wrestling credentials and knockout out power in both of his hands. But if somehow Conor can get past him there will still be a long list of challenges that pose a threat to his title dreams.

Justin Gatehje is the no.1 contender in the lightweight division and is an amazing matchup for Conor as both of them are known for their boxing. The division’s nightmare is Islam Makhachev who is arguably the worst matchup for Conor at the moment. Islam is the best friend and training partner of the former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov who holds a dominant victory over Conor. The lightweight division of the UFC is getting better day by day and new challengers are rising which is going to make it harder for Conor to climb up the ranking and become the lightweight champion again.
