Long Beach is marked as the second event of the season where IMSA reverted their decision to the previous Balance of Performance system that was used earlier in 2023. That is why the 100 min Sprint will feature GTP and GTD prototypes at Long Beach.

IMSA has made significant revisions to the Balance of Performance (BoP) process for the GTD Pro and GTD classes ahead of the upcoming Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Cadillac.

The GTD class will head into the race without any performance-related adjustments. The BoP table released for the third round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship confirms that there have been no weight or power changes to any of the GT3-spec cars. However, there have been some fuel capacity adjustments:

  • Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R: Reduced by 2 liters.
  • Porsche 911 GT3 R: Reduced by 3 liters.
  • Ford Mustang GT3: Increased by 2 liters.

Acura ARX-06 will be 5 kg heavier but with a 3 kW increase in maximum power. On the other hand, BMW M Hybrid V8 will receive a 3 kW boost. Porsche 963 gets its 5 kW of additional power but with a 3 kg increase in minimum weight. Cadillac’s V-Series. R will remain at the same 520 kW maximum power level but benefit from a 2 kg weight break since Sebring.

IMSA Reverts to Previous GT BoP

The BoP process has largely reverted to a system based on last year’s approach. In the 2024 season, a system was implemented where manufacturers nominated their own performance expectations.

However, this led to post-race penalties for Ferrari and BMW at Daytona due to exceeding IMSA’s expectations.

“I think there’s been a realization, a recognition from the manufacturer group that the complexity in defining performance targets is difficult,” IMSA VP of Competition Simon Hodgson said. “So they’ve asked IMSA to revert to controlling the BoP process as we move forward for the rest of this year.”

Now, IMSA’s technical committee will directly declare BoP figures for the GT3 platform, ensuring transparency between manufacturers.
