There aren’t many boxers today who could be classified as a ‘threat’ to Canelo Alvarez, but the Mexican’s former adversary Floyd Mayweather Jr, who handed Canelo his solo professional defeat back in 2013, believes David Benavidez is one of the biggest challenges that the pound for pound king can face in the squared circle.

The reigning undisputed super middleweight champion of the world, Canelo Alvarez is one boxer who is on the wishlist of many in his division as well as other weight classes. One of them is David Benavidez, the two-time WBC champion who claimed that he has earned a fight.

However, Canelo’s schedule this year is occupied by a return to light heavyweight to take on WBA (Super) champ Dmitry Bivol on May 7th, followed by the highly anticipated trilogy bout against unified middleweight world champion Gennadiy Golovkin, which is targeted for September which will see Canelo defending his undisputed crown against his rival “GGG”.

Moreover, Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso had, responded to Benavidez’s claim by saying that “El Bandera Roja” is yet to achieve the spot of earning the chance to fight the four belt titleholder.

Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather, the former fifteen times world champion who opined in December last year that Canelo might be avoiding Benavidez, believes Benavidez is a tougher fighter than the Mexican’s team is assuming, stating that the 24-year-old can prove to be one of the toughest challenges for Canelo.

“He did what made him happy. Sometimes you got to do what makes you happy,” Mayweather told Fighthype about Canelo deciding to go after Bivol as his next fight, “I think one of the biggest challenges for Canelo is Benavidez. Benavidez is like Canelo. He’s [Benavidez] is different because he throws a lot of combinations, he’s young, and he throws a lot of combinations.”

“They said Canelo is no different. Someone had to give Canelo a shot at the top guy because I was a top guy. Canelo is a top guy. Benavidez, [Jermall] Charlo, or one of those guys deserves a chance. Give at least one of them a chance,” added Mayweather. [H/T Boxingnews24.com]
