Soon after Canelo Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) become the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world, questions had arisen as who would be the next fighter to face the Mexican maestro. Among the many names, David Benavidez stood out, as the undefeated youngster himself claimed that he deserves the fight. However, Canelo himself expressed his wish to move up the divisions and challenge WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu and the WBC had approved the request. Regarding this, none other than Floyd Mayweather has opined on the situation, claiming that Canelo is avoiding Benavidez.

David Benavidez revealed in an interview that he believes he was the only one left in the division that Canelo’s team would pick up next. The former two time super-middleweight champion also added that he has the “experience, footwork, speed” to step inside the squared circle with Canelo.

However, Canelo’s desire to face Makabu made Benavidez unlikely to face Canelo even as a backup fighter. Moreover, Canelo’s trainer Eddy Reynoso said to Fox Deportes that ‘El Bandera Roja’ won’t be challenging Canelo anytime soon.

Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather, the only boxer who defeated Canelo inside the squared circle, spoke his mind regarding the Benavidez situation, saying that he wants the fight as “Money” feels that Canelo is ducking Benavidez.

“Canelo a hell of a fighter. But my personal opinion, he’s ducking Benavidez. You know, it’s just my personal opinion. And I’m allowed to speak my mind. That’s just what it is. He’s going up to cruiserweight. And I’m not knocking him, but he’s going up to cruiserweight and that same guy [Makabu] was at, he used to be at the Mayweather Boxing Gym, and the guys were really getting the best of him in the Mayweather Boxing Gym,” Mayweather said following a press conference at JW Marriott LA Live while promoting the upcoming Gervonta Davis vs Isaac Cruz fight this Sunday night at Staples Center.

“So, if he’s going up to quote, unquote cruiserweight, I mean, if that’s the case, Benavidez is gonna go up and beat that same guy. He could beat that same guy at 168,” Mayweather went on, “So, he’s not doing nothing, you know, like I said before. But when you are put in a certain position, he should be, I mean, he’s able to like me, you know, when I was in a position, I can pick and choose who I want to, because I earned that right. But do I like this fight? Uh-uh. Absolutely not. We wanna see Benavidez. Let’s make it happen.” [H/T Boxing Scene]
