Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians, who mentored the franchise into their second Super Bowl triumph in the 2020 season, has decided to step down from his spot and has shifted to an executive role, becoming the Senior football consultant for the Bucs. Filling in Arians’ shoes is Todd Bowles, a former defensive coordinator of the franchise.
This is the right time for me to make this transition: Bruce Arians becomes Bucs’ senior football consultant
A former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, Bruce Arians took charge of the Buccaneers in 2019 and in his second season with the team, the Bucs made it to the Super Bowl LV and defeated the then defending champions Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 at the Raymond James Stadium, which was also Tom Brady’s first Super Bowl win with the Bucs.
The 70-year-old, who has now shifted to a front office role with the team, is 80-48-1 as a head coach in his eight years (five with the Cardinals and three with the Bucs) and under his coaching, the Bucs clocked a 31-18 record.
“I have spent most of the last 50 years of my life on the sidelines as a football coach in one form or another. Today, I have made the decision to move from the sidelines into another role with the Buccaneers front office, assisting (general manager) Jason Licht and his staff,” Arians was quoted in an official statement released by the Bucs.
“I love football. I love the relationships, the strategy, the competition — everything. It has been one hell of a ride, but I know this is the right time for me to make this transition,” the statement from Arians added. [H/T The Guardian]
Arians stepping down as Bucs head coach is the second biggest retirement news of the year, after Tom Brady’s news of quitting the sport broke the pro football scene back in February.
However, the seven time Vince Lombardi trophy winner reversed his decision six weeks later and earlier this month announced that he was coming out of retirement because he had “Unfinished business”.
