After weeks of inactivity in the transfer window, Manchester United are expected to go all-in for last-minute deals. According to sources, Edinson Cavani has agreed to a two-year deal with the Red Devils and is on his way to Manchester for his medical.
The 33-year-old has been a free agent ever since his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired. Despite interest from Benfica and Atletico Madrid, a move was never materialized following which the player was offered to Manchester United.
Juventus were also close in sealing a move for the accomplished striker, but the talks fell through over the length of his contract.
Cavani is said to be thrilled at the prospect of playing at Old Trafford and the Premier League. The striker is speculated to sign an initial one-year deal with the option of extending for a further year.
The Uruguayan’s age has reportedly not put off Manchester United in their pursuit, who feel that Cavani can make a similar impact like his former PSG teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Manchester United will have to dish out hefty weekly wages accounting to 10 million Euros per year for the striker and also an additional 10 million as the agent fees as per sources.
With the arrival of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, Cavani was deemed surplus to requirements. The record goalscorer’s contract was not extended, following which the player was officially a free-agent.
Manchester United’s final push in the transfer window starting with Cavani
The Red Devils have reportedly not given up on their pursuit of Jadon Sancho despite only a couple more days remaining in the transfer window. The club is also actively monitoring the situations of Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos and Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele for the right-winger position.
While the deal for Porto’s Alex Telles seems easy on paper, the club is unwilling to spend a sum of 25 million Euros for a player who only has eight months left in his contract.
In recent days, Manchester United have been successful in offloading Andreas Pereira to Seria A side Lazio. A potential permanent move for Chris Smalling to AS Roma is on the cards while Diogo Dalot is likely to spend a year with AC Milan on loan.
Manchester United face a visit from Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur later today as both sides hope to turn their fortunes following a dull start to the campaign.
