Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal International is set to feature in the fixture against Croatia as the inaugural champions commence their UEFA Nations League campaign.
Cristiano Ronaldo out with toe infection?
The Portuguese Football Federation released a statement. It read, “Cristiano Ronaldo will be absent from training this morning [Thursday].”
It continued, “The captain of the national team, who did gym work yesterday, has an infection in his right toe and is undergoing antibiotic treatment. The FPF will daily re-evaluate the player’s clinical situation.”
It is a matter of concern for the Portugal national team boss, Fernando Santos as it is problematic for him to drop the former Manchester United star out of the squad.
However, he will inspect the condition of Ronaldo on Friday. Should the Portuguese star miss out on the game against Croatia at Estadio do Dragao, he would make a return against Sweden in Stockholm.
Cristiano Ronaldo stands at 99 goals in 164 International matches as of yet. He is now eyeing to eclipse the world record of Ali Daei, the former Iran striker, who has 109 goals to his name.
With the global pandemic of Covid-19, the International fixtures came to a stalemate. Thus, the 35-year-old striker could not add up the goals to his record.
Cristiano Ronaldo played a crucial role when his national side, Portugal won the UEFA Euro 2016 as well as last year’s UEFA Nations League
In the previous year, UEFA Nations League, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick when the host, Portugal faced Switzerland in the semi-final.
Scoring the opening goal of the match, the five time Ballon d’OR winner broke the record of Asamoah Gyan (9) with whom he previously shared the record. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in 10 consecutive international competitions.
Thus, he helped his team secure the spot in the UEFA Nations League final. Portugal then went on to defeat Netherlands 1-0 and lifted the inaugural trophy.
It is to seen whether Cristiano Ronaldo is declared fit to play against the 2018 World Cup Champions, Croatia or he will have to wait for some time to make the return and accomplish his century of goals.
