I Haven’t Retired Yet: Canelo Alvarez Disagrees Calling Gervonta Davis The “New Face Of Boxing”

Canelo Álvarez does not believe that Gervonta Davis is the new face of boxing because that is not achieved with a single fight, and besides, he has not retired from the sport yet.

One fight doesn’t put you in that position: Canelo Alvarez

“I’m not retired yet, my friend,” during a virtual press conference, Canelo responded to a question from The Ring about whether Gervonta Davis is the new face of boxing. “They can say whatever they want, but it’s not that easy. One fight does not put you in that position. You need to do a lot of things.”

All that being said, Canelo expressed his appreciation for “Tank” Davis, and for the good young fighters who are becoming the new stars of the sport.

“There are a lot of good fighters coming up, one of them is Gervonta for sure,” Canelo went on. “But he needs to do more, not just one fight. I like Gervonta Davis a lot, but he needs to do more to be the face of boxing. One fight with Garcia, and I respect Ryan Garcia, isn’t going to do it.”

Canelo also explained what he believes it takes to be the new face of boxing.

“Just fighting the best, again and again, up and down the weight classes, becoming undisputed, doing what I’ve been doing my whole career.” Canelo indicated while reiterating that he is still considered the best pound-for-pound fighter.

“I feel I’m still the best. I feel I’m No. 1 because nobody out there has been doing it like me, (going) up and down in weight, fighting the best fighters, (fighting) the champions, fighting four times in 11 months, unifying all the belts (at super middleweight) in 11 months. Nobody does what I’ve been doing,” he added.

The reigning undisputed super middleweight champion of the world, Canelo will be returning to action this Saturday night against John Ryder at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico.
