Mexican boxing icon Canelo Alvarez has openly regretted the controversy created with Lionel Messi regarding the Mexico jersey, thought things better and apologized to the Argentine stalwart.

Following the Mexico vs Argentina match at the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup, a video surfaced on social media showing a Mexico shirt on the floor in the Argentine dressing room. After Messi allegedly “kicked” it, Canelo was provoked and verbally attacked the veteran forward on social media.

“Did you guys see Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag. He better pray to God that I don’t find him,” The undisputed super middleweight world champion boxer had stated. “Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico! I’m not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did.”

I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina: Canelo Alvarez

Canelo made it clear two days ago that one of his annoyances was seeing the Mexico shirt on the floor, which was disrespectful. He had also stated that he did not expect an apology from the Argentine team, and today it is Canelo who apologized.

“These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina. Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn,” his latest tweet reads.

Some footballers, including the Mexican captain Andres Guardado wrote and responded that this is normal, because the clothes are sweaty and when they change in the locker room they leave them on the floor. Canelo understood the situation and, far from any controversy, he wished the teams of Mexico and Argentina luck in the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

“I wish both teams much success in their matches today,” he concluded. “And here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”
