Callum Wilson returned back to the Premier League after signing with Newcastle United ahead of the upcoming season. The striker cost Newcastle United 20 million pounds as they look to bolster their forces upfront.Â
After the signing, the former Bournemouth striker revealed the movie “Goal!” as an inspiration to sign with the Magpies.
Apart from the movie, the England International was also aided by the advice he received from club legend and record Premier League goalscorer Alan Shearer.
Securing a four-year deal with the club, the player revealed how this move has made the little boy in him excited. He said:
“My son is getting to the age now where he is watching more movies, more football, and he watches Goal!” he told NUFC TV after joining the club.
“So I’m sitting there watching it with him and, obviously, it’s all about Newcastle and things like that and, as the little boy in me, that got me excited as well and you’re thinking, ‘Yeah, that’s the one for me’.
“It suited him, suits me, and hopefully suits the fans and I can provide many more goals.”
In the movie released in 2005, the protagonist Santiago Munez signs for the club after earning a trial and goes onto to fire the club into the Champions League final.
Alan Shearer’s role in the deal
The former striker had reached out to Wilson after the latter received his maiden call-up to England back in 2018. The duo have stayed in touch ever since and Wilson turned to Shearer for advice ahead of the move.
“We kept in touch and Shearer messaged me when I got a call-up to England and we have also been in touch about coming here. I asked a few questions: ‘What’s it like around the town?’ and things like that.
“He was nothing but in praise of the football club and the place. It was already in my mind that I was coming here but that just nailed it on and it was concrete.”
Newcastle United dipping into the market with Wilson and Fraser’s signings done
The Magpies secured two deals in a day after also managing to secure the services of Wilson’s Bournemouth teammate Ryan Fraser.
Wilson claimed that he looks forward to scoring a lot of goals for the club which currently has promising players such as Saint-Maximin and the Longstaff brothers in the middle of the park.
