Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick is currently facing challenges in securing a coaching position for the 2024 NFL season. The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders are the last two teams with head coaching vacancies, but reports from The Athletic’s Jeff Howe and Steve Buckley suggest that Belichick is considered a “long shot” for both openings.

Bill Belichick, one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, recently concluded his tenure with the Patriots after a disappointing 4-13 season in 2023. Despite his impressive track record, including six Super Bowl victories and 333 career wins, it appears that the Seahawks and Commanders are not actively pursuing him for their head coaching positions.
Falcons hire former interim head coach over Bill Belichick to avoid huge staff overhaul
Surprisingly, the Atlanta Falcons were the only team to interview Belichick for a head coaching role, and they ultimately hired Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Senior NFL Reporter/Lead Content Strategist Albert Breer provided some insight into the huge staff overhaul that would have resulted if Bill was hired as he stated, “Arthur Blank (Falcons owner) wanted to hire Bill Belichick the head coach. And it wasn’t the money. I think he was willing to pay him. It was everything else that was going to have to happen. And the amount of people around him that Bill’s going to need here. And the amount of people that might be outgoing because of it.”

Six head coaching vacancies have already been filled, leaving Belichick with limited options. Howe and Buckley suggest that it would require a significant change in direction for the Seahawks or Commanders to consider Belichick at this point. NFL insider Jordan Schultz had previously reported that the Commanders weren’t interested in Belichick despite earlier speculation. The Commanders recently interviewed assistant HC/OC Eric Bieniemy to fill in the position of head coach.

Bill Belichick’s departure from the Patriots marked the end of a remarkable 24-year stint with the team. With 49 consecutive years as part of an NFL coaching staff since 1975, the 71-year-old faces the possibility of a break in his coaching streak if he doesn’t secure a position for the 2024 season.
While Bill Belichick may not find a coaching opportunity for the upcoming season, there is speculation that he could become a top candidate in the next coaching cycle if he is forced to sit out. With his extensive experience and impressive coaching record, Belichick remains a highly respected figure in the NFL, and his coaching future will be closely monitored in the coming months.
