The news was broken by Nationwide90fm, a radio station from Jamaica. Aside from the record-breaking sprinter, the station also named football Raheem Sterling as a person infected by the pandemic.

After the radio station aired the report, Bolt went on to social media to confirm the news.

On Twitter, he said: “Good morning everybody. I’m confirmed of Covid-19. I did a test on Saturday. Trying to be responsible so I’m going to stay in, and stay away from my friends. And also, I am having no symptoms, so I am going to quarantine myself.”

“I will wait and see what is the protocol and how should I go about quarantining myself, from the Ministry of Health. Just to be safe, I have quarantined myself, and just to take it easy. Be safe over there,” he added.

Bolt Is Being Criticized For Hosting The Party

Bolt’s birthday party on August 21 was attended by Sterling, who the radio station named in their report. It was reportedly also attended by fellow Jamaican star sportsmen such as footballer Leon Bailey and hard-hitting cricketer Chris Gayle.

Bolt is already being criticized over the hosting of a mega, mask-free party for his 34th birthday. He is being accused of carelessness in a situation when cases of infections are surging in the Carribean nation. Jamaica has had 1612 Covid-19 cases until now with 819 recoveries and 16 deaths. Election is on the verge of cancellation as educational institutions has been shut down.

An eight-time Olympic gold medallist, Bolt is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100 m and 200 m titles at three consecutive Olympics (2008, 2012 and 2016). He also won two 4 × 100 relay gold medals. He gained worldwide fame for his double sprint victory in world record times at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which made him the first person to hold both records since fully automatic time became mandatory.
