Sonoma Raceway, after more than two decades, received its first new coat of asphalt in February. The track’s surface has been rejuvenated, aiming to enhance the racing experience for drivers and fans alike. To test the surface three Cup Series drivers from different Manufacturers reached for the testing on Tuesday of the revamped surface of Sonoma Raceway.
Among them was Martin Truex Jr who revealed the interesting outings of the test while talking with Bob Pockrass.
Martin Truex Jr’s review after the test
Martin Truex Jr., one of three drivers at the Sonoma tire test, said they are running record speeds on the repaved surface. He said so far no tire falloff (which would need to help with potential passing) but still have things to work on. His longest run has only been 12 laps. pic.twitter.com/istEkjZs6P

Following the test where Goodyear selected three drivers from different NASCAR teams, including Ross Chastain, Josh Berry, and Martin Truex Jr., Truex revealed that the track is poised to become significantly more intriguing after the changes made to its surface. Speaking to Bob Pockrass, Truex expressed that the track now offers great speed and minimal to no tire fallout, providing drivers with ample opportunities to attempt potential passing maneuvers.
“It feels even narrower than it used to feel because of the speed, so yeah, it’s going to be totally different than ever.” JGR driver also added.
Fans raised the concern in the comment section that NASCAR would have used the same tires at Bristol as it offered a lot of drama.
Tire issue at Bristol Motor Speedway
The freshly repaved Bristol track threw everyone for a loop. The severe tire wear around the 0.533-mile oval during the Food City 500 caught everyone off guard.
Drivers discovered that the tires wouldn’t last more than 47 to 50 laps before risking cord damage and losing air pressure. It was a high-stakes battle of tire management.
To address the issue, NASCAR allowed Goodyear to provide teams with an extra set of tires during the race. However, this change significantly impacted the race pace and pit strategy.
