The fans have been vocal about wanting a bout between Samoan cousins, The Rock and the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. The highly-anticipated bout was rumored to take place at this year’s WrestleMania 39 that took place in April. It has come to light that the match was indeed “locked” for The Show of Shows. However, it never materialized.
Roman Reigns entered his third WrestleMania this year as WWE’s champion and his championship reign is unstoppable. He faced Cody Rhodes and defended his title successfully thanks to Solo Sikoa.
The Rock says the match against Roman Reigns was planned
WWE legend The Rock revealed that he was initially set to face the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania 39 as he had a conversation about the match with Nick Khan and Vince McMahon. Speaking with Pat McAfee on his podcast, The Great One said:
“That was locked. We were doing it… In the beginning of 2022, Nick Khan, he was very instrumental in bringing Vince and I together. We all flew to LA, we broke out Teremana… About an hour later, we started talking about the potential of what this match could be between myself and Roman Reigns headlining WrestleMania at SoFi. We shook hands and hugged… So, we got really really close but we couldn’t actually nail what that thing was. So, we decided to put our pencils down.”
We will have to wait and see if the match takes place at next year’s WrestleMania 40.
