Teofimo Lopez,23, has become the undisputed lightweight champion after outpointing two-time Olympic champion and former three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
The judges scored the fight 116-112, 119-109, 117-111.
For the first time in nearly three decades that boxing has an undisputed lightweight champion. Heading into this fight, Teofimo was a huge 4-1 underdog.
Lopez executed a perfect gameplan early on and completely shut out Lomachenko in the first half of the fight. Teofimo shut down Loma’s ability to cut angles in this fight. He stepped with Loma so he couldn’t get that patented circle pivot and worked the body beautifully.
Lomachenko sensed an urgency in the second half of the fight and rallied from 7th to 11th round. Heading into the 12th round, Lomachenko was the fresher fighter of the two, but Teofimo didn’t want to slow down and constantly landed huge bombs early. By the end of the round, he had Lomachenko staggered and hurt.
